GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL:
TIMELESS APPEAL
Designed by Whitney Warren and Charles D. Wetmore in neoclassical style and built in the period 1903 to 1913,
Grand Central Terminal, the world’s largest railway station with 44 platforms, stands midway along Park Avenue
in New York City. The facade is dominated by a huge clock and the three sculptures of Mercury, Hercules and
Minerva which tower over it. Beneath them is a statue of the railway magnate Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt.
Inside, the main concourse has a huge vaulted ceiling (about 40 meters high, 40 meters wide and 80 meters
long) covered by a great astronomical mural, in which the zodiac section is famously painted backwards because
of a mistake by the artist. Every day about 550 trains pass through Grand Central Terminal and half a million
passengers, who traditionally meet outside the information office in the centre of the main concourse. Grand
Central Terminal has also been used as the set for many famous films: Twentieth Century (1934), Cotton Club
(1984), The Fisher King (1991), Carlito’s Way (1994) and The Untouchables (1987), to mention just a few. In 1904
Botticino Classico marble, because of its compactness, strength, versatility and appearance, was used to clad the
majestic interiors of Grand Central Terminal, including:
• the double staircase connecting the main hall with the entrance from Vanderbilt Avenue
• the skirting around the interior walls of the building;
• the ticket offices and the circular information office, located in the main hall;
• the wall cladding in the entrance to the station and the dining
and shopping concourse in the basement.

GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL:
FASCINO SENZA TEMPO
Progettata da Whitney Warren e Charles D. Wetmore in stile neoclassico e realizzata tra il 1903 e il 1913,
Grand Central Terminal, la stazione ferroviaria più grande del mondo per numero di banchine (44), sorge al
centro di Park Avenue a New York. La facciata è dominata da un grande orologio, sovrastato da tre sculture
che raffigurano Mercurio, Ercole e Minerva. Poco più sotto, la statua del magnate delle ferrovie Cornelius
“Commodore” Vanderbilt. All’interno, l’atrio principale è caratterizzato da una grande volta (alta circa 40
metri, larga 40 e lunga 80) su cui è dipinta la costellazione dello zodiaco (la linea dell’eclisse, per un errore
del pittore, gira nel senso sbagliato). Ogni giorno transitano per Grand Central Terminal circa 550 treni e
mezzo milione di passeggeri che fanno dell’ufficio informazioni, che si trova al centro dell’atrio principale,
un tradizionale luogo di appuntamenti. Grand Central Terminal è stata eletta anche set naturale di molti
film famosi: Ventesimo secolo (1934), Cotton club (1984), La leggenda del re pescatore (1991), Carlito’s way
(1994) e Gli intoccabili (1987), solo per citarne alcuni. Nel 1904 il marmo Botticino Classico, grazie alle sue
caratteristiche di compattezza, di resistenza e di versatilità e alla sua valenza estetica, viene utilizzato per
rivestire i maestosi interni di Grand Central Terminal, quali ad esempio:
• la doppia scalinata che collega l’atrio principale con l’ingresso che si affaccia su Vanderbilt Avenue
• lo zoccolo di rivestimento delle pareti interne dell’edificio
• le biglietterie e il circolare ufficio informazioni, collocati nell’atrio principale
• i rivestimenti delle pareti di accesso alla stazione e dell’area dei ristoranti e dei negozi nel piano
seminterrato.
